In Chapter 3 Nanny, Jainie's grandmother, dies, her final words being, "Lawd, you know mah heart.  Ah done de best ah could do.  De rest is up to you."  It seems that she has placed way to much faith in Jainie's new husband, Mr. Killiks.  She places all of her trust in Mr. Killiks to care and love her yet she seems oblivious to how abusive and how Jainie will obviously never be happy with him.  Her complete ignorance to this flaw and Jainies interests causes Jainie to leave her husband and run off with Joe.  Nanny also seems to be placing Jainie with all the short comings of her life and the things that her life failed to have, love, happiness, marriage, and wealth.
